New Jersey

In addition to the Regulations of the Board of Mortuary Science of New Jersey, Trust Family requires the following: 

  • Prominent display of the Trust Family designation
  • Additional Grief Counseling resources
  • Full and open disclosure of all price lists, casket lists, outer burial container price lists and service fees
  • Written acknowledgment by the patron of their understanding and acceptance of Trust Family policies regarding embalming, cremation, casket selection, outer burial containers and warranties

The Regulations of the Board of Mortuary Science of New Jersey require that all funeral directors:

  • Be duly licensed by the Board of Mortuary Science of New Jersey (the "Board").
  • Pass an examination to be conducted by the Board.
  • Complete 2 years of practical training and experience as a registered trainee as designated by the Board, or satisfactorily complete 3 academic years of instruction in a college or university approved by the State Department of Education and 1 year of instruction in a school of mortuary science approved by the State Board of Mortuary Science, in which case the funeral director need only have completed 1 year of practical training and experience as a registered trainee.
  • Satisfactorily complete a minimum of 2 academic years of instruction in a college or university approved by the State Department of Education and 1 year of instruction in a school of mortuary science approved by the State Board of Mortuary Science, except that the requirement for 2 years academic instruction in a college or university shall not apply to a trainee registered prior to the effective date of this act and serving 3 years as a registered trainee.
  • Register as a trainee with the Board, pay a registration fee and receive a certificate as a registered trainee.
  • Be a resident of NJ continuously during period of training and experience.
  • Be aged 21 or over.
  • Annually apply to the Board for a certificate of registration for each mortuary and pay the annual registration fee.
  • Complete any continuing education requirements imposed by the Board.
  • Be issued an identification card stating that the holder thereof has received a license and is carrying on the practice of mortuary science, funeral directing or embalming.
  • Maintain full, accurate records of all funerals conducted or participated in, for six years.
  • Achieve a passing score on the National Board Examination, the Mortuary Jurisprudence Examination and the Practical Examination administered by the Board.

 Similarly, The Regulations of the Board of Mortuary Science of New Jersey require that:

  • All mortuaries be under the immediate and personal supervision, direction, management, and control of a person duly licensed as a practitioner of mortuary science or as a funeral director.
  • All funeral directing shall be under the immediate and personal supervision, direction, management, and control of a person duly licensed as a practitioner of mortuary science.
  • The construction, maintenance and operation of all mortuaries shall conform to the rules and regulations of the Board promulgated to safeguard and promote the public health, safety, morals and welfare.
